In this verse by verse Bible study through 1 Samuel 17:1-31, we dive into the classic account of David and Goliath. Standing over nine feet tall in the Valley of Elah, this Philistine warrior terrified King Saul and the entire army of Israel for forty days. While the Israelites had armor, weapons, and military experience, they lacked the spiritual courage needed to step out in faith.
We open with a historical look at baseball pioneer Dan Litwhiler, an unlikely minor leaguer who quietly served behind the scenes, making sure his classroom of students was cared for before taking his big league opportunity. In the same way, David was a faithful shepherd boy from Bethlehem, running errands for his father Jesse, delivering bread and cheese to his older brothers, and making sure his father’s flock was safe before running to the battle line.
Through this Old Testament expository teaching, we see how David responded to the taunts of Goliath and the harsh criticism of his oldest brother Eliab. Where others saw a terrifying giant, David saw an uncircumcised Philistine defying the living God. David understood that spiritual victory does not depend on physical stature, heavy bronze armor, or military hardware, but on walking in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Whether you are walking through temptation, deep suffering, or overwhelming life obstacles, this verse by verse teaching will encourage you to trust the Lord in your daily life. Discover how God uses ordinary, humble believers who walk by faith and rely on the power of the Spirit to stand strong against the giants of this world.
