Welcome to our verse-by-verse Bible study through the New Testament. In this message, we continue our journey through 2 Peter 2:17-22, where the Apostle Peter issues a sobering warning against the spiritual “swill milk” being sold by false teachers in the early church.
Drawing a parallel from the tragic history of the 1850s swill milk scandal in New York City where thousands of infants died from tainted milk stretched with plaster and molasses, we see that spiritual deception is just as lethal. Peter describes these deceivers as springs without water and mists driven by a storm. They promise total freedom and secret enlightenment, but their lives are actually marked by fleshly desires and enslavement to sin.
In this Calvary Chapel teaching, we examine the marks of a false teacher and the consequences of their influence. From a conservative, evangelical perspective, we dive into the biblical distinction between true liberty in Jesus Christ and the counterfeit freedom offered by the world. While these teachers offer “Pure Country Milk,” it is a grotesque mixture of error that targets new believers and those searching for spiritual truth.
Key Themes in this Study:
The Character of Deception: Understanding why Peter compares false teachers to empty wells and aimless clouds.
True Freedom vs. Bondage: Exploring how serving Jesus as Lord leads to a “watered garden” life (Isaiah 58:11) while serving self leads to corruption.
Eternal Security and Transformation: A biblical look at verses 20-22. We discuss why a truly saved believer is guarded by God’s power (1 Peter 1:5) and how the analogy of the dog and the sow points to a lack of inward nature change rather than a loss of salvation.
The Living Water: How to distinguish the life-giving Word of God from the stench of modern spiritual “swill.”
If you are a student of the Bible or someone seeking to know more about the God of Israel and the grace of Jesus, we hope this study encourages you to look intently into the “perfect law of freedom.” Our goal is to be doers of the Word, not hearers only, as we grow together in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior.
