In this verse by verse study titled The Music Man, we continue our journey through 1 and 2 Samuel, exploring the sharp contrast between King Saul and young David. We look closely at what it truly means to live a life filled with the Holy Spirit versus trying to manage life in our own self reliance.
The text contrasts Saul, whose pride alienated him from God, with David, a humble shepherd whose real strength came from the LORD being with him. To illustrate this spiritual tension, we look at the historical business career of William Durant, founder of General Motors. Durant was a visionary entrepreneur whose erratic decisions and lack of judgment led to chaos, mirroring how Saul operated when he tried to seek quick fixes rather than true repentance. Just as Durant brought in Alfred Sloan, the very man who would eventually replace him, Saul welcomed David into his palace without realizing God was already orchestrating the transition of the kingdom.
This passage reveals how Saul sought temporary relief through David’s harp playing rather than turning back to the Lord in repentance. Many people today make the same mistake, seeking comfort or emotional feeling rather than spiritual healing through Jesus Christ.
As continuationists, we believe the Holy Spirit actively indwells, equips, and empowers believers today. We are called to walk in step with the Spirit, exercise our spiritual gifts, and extend God’s grace even in difficult circumstances.
