When a crisis hits, what do you rush to save? During the Great Fire of London, a man named Samuel Pepys famously buried a wheel of parmesan cheese in his garden to protect it from the flames. In our ongoing verse by verse Bible study through the Gospel of Mark, we reach Mark 13:14-23 where Jesus warns of a time of trouble far greater than any historical disaster. In this sermon on the Olivet Discourse, we look at Christ’s solemn warning regarding the Great Tribulation and the abomination of desolation.
As a verse by verse verse Bible study from a Calvary Chapel perspective, we approach end times Bible prophecy with a literal, futurist view. We believe in a premillennial, pretribulational rapture where the Church is caught up before the seven year Tribulation period. During this future period of judgment, the Antichrist will break his covenant with Israel, set up an idolatrous image in the rebuilt Jerusalem temple, and declare himself to be God. Jesus warns those living in Judea during that time to flee to the mountains without stopping to grab a coat or look back.
Throughout Scripture, God’s judgment is always paired with His mercy. Just as God warned the early Jewish believers to flee Jerusalem before the Roman destruction in 70 AD, He gives clear warnings for the future. The severe troubles described in Revelation 6 through 19 show that God must judge sin, yet His persistent desire is to rescue souls. While believers today will not go through the Great Tribulation, we still live in days filled with spiritual deception and false prophets performing deceptive signs and wonders.
To guard against false teachers, Joseph-Smith-style new revelations, and spiritual laziness, Jesus gives us a simple command. We are called to watch and stay grounded in the complete, reliable Word of God. Much like the citizens of London who neglected their church fire hooks and buckets before the great blaze, Christians today can easily get distracted by temporary possessions and forget our mission. Knowing eschatology and end times prophecy helps realign our priorities so we care less about earthly treasures and more about sharing the saving gospel of Jesus Christ with a searching world.
