In this verse by verse study through Mark 13:32-37, we reach the conclusion of the Olivet Discourse in our New Testament Gospel of Mark teaching series. As we look at this passage on the return of Jesus Christ, we see an urgent call for every believer to stay spiritually awake and alert in these last days.
We begin with the story of Randy Gardner, who famously stayed awake for eleven days for a high school science fair project. While physical sleep deprivation degrades the body, spiritual sleepiness poses an even greater danger to the Christian walk. Jesus warns His followers about the sudden nature of His coming, reminding us that no one knows the day or the hour, not the angels, nor the Son during His earthly ministry, but only God the Father.
This leads into an important theological discussion regarding the hypostatic union and the deity of Christ. How could Jesus be fully God and fully man yet not know the timing of the end times? We explore historical orthodox Christian doctrine, examining how Jesus voluntarily yielded the independent exercise of His divine attributes while fully submitted to the Father. Unlike ancient heresies like Arianism, the Bible teaches that Jesus remains fully divine and fully human for all eternity.
Rather than trying to calculate dates for the Rapture or the Second Coming, Jesus instructs His church to maintain active vigilance. Through the illustration of the Navy chief retirement poem, The Watch, we see what it means to be sentinels rather than passive sightseers. As servants in the house of the Lord, God has given every Christian unique authority, specific spiritual gifts, and a clear work to accomplish before the Master returns.
