In 1903, the mountain town of Frank, Alberta, was crushed when 120 million tons of limestone collapsed off Turtle Mountain in a matter of seconds. Geologists knew the disaster was geologically inevitable due to natural fractures and deep mining, yet many residents ignored the warning signs until it was too late. In Mark 13:24-31, Jesus points to an event even more certain than the collapse of a mountain. Continuing our verse by verse Bible study through the Gospel of Mark, this sermon on the Olivet Discourse focuses on the absolute certainty of Christ’s return and the end of the Great Tribulation.
As a verse by verse Bible study from a conservative evangelical, Calvary Chapel perspective, we approach end times prophecy with a literal, futurist view. We hold to a premillennial, pretribulational rapture, believing the Church will be removed before the seven year Tribulation unfolds. While preterists argue these prophecies were fulfilled during the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD, the text makes clear that the second coming of Jesus will be a global, cosmic event that no one can miss. The sun and moon will be darkened, stars will fall from the sky, and all eyes will be drawn to the Son of Man returning in power and glory.
During this final culmination, Jesus will send His angels to gather the elect from every corner of the earth, demonstrating His supernatural faithfulness to restore Israel and save those who trust Him. Using the parable of the fig tree, Jesus reminds us that just as sprouting leaves signal approaching summer, these end times signs signal that His return is right at the door. Furthermore, His declaration that His words will never pass away serves as a powerful claim of deity, establishing Holy Scripture as the ultimate, unshakeable foundation for our lives.
While the coming judgment on the earth cannot be stopped, individuals can be rescued today by surrendering their lives to Christ before it is too late. Jesus stands at the door of our hearts now in mercy, calling us to open the door and receive His grace. For believers today, knowing the inevitability of Bible prophecy keeps us anchored in the Word of God rather than modern culture, empowering us to live as lights that reveal Christ to a searching world.
