In this week’s prophecy update, we take a look at how everyday experiences—even a trip to a big-box retailer like Costco—can illustrate the rapid shift toward the world described in the Book of Revelation. As we continue our verse-by-verse study of the Bible and keep a watchful eye on global trends, it becomes increasingly clear that the infrastructure for a centralized, digital commerce system is being built right before our eyes.
From a Calvary Chapel perspective, we approach these developments not with a spirit of fear, but with biblical discernment. When we see membership scanners, digital QR codes for entry, and the rollout of scan-and-pay systems, we recognize a familiar pattern. Revelation 13 describes a future period during the Great Tribulation where access to buy and sell is strictly controlled by a unified, digital authorization. While technology itself is neutral, these modern conveniences are lowering the resistance of the general public to systems of total oversight.
We also consider the rise of Artificial Intelligence and digital avatars in light of the “image of the beast” mentioned by the Apostle John. For centuries, the idea of a speaking image that exercises authority seemed symbolic or impossible. Today, with the advancement of AI and machines that simulate human personality, we can see exactly how such a prophecy could be realized.
This update emphasizes that while we aren’t suggesting a specific retailer is fulfilling prophecy, we are certainly seeing the “birth pains” of a coming system. As believers in Jesus Christ, our focus remains on the blessed hope of the Rapture. Jesus told His followers to watch and be ready. The goal of studying Bible prophecy is to encourage the church to stay awake and to reach those who do not yet know the Savior.
